Personal Development

Egremont Primary offers a rich and comprehensive programme of personal development that nurtures pupils’ character, well-being, and sense of citizenship. Developed in line with the Jubilee Centre’s research into character development and underpinned by the school values of collaboration, citizenship, expression, and inspiration, the programme provides pupils with a broad range of experiences to develop their talents and interests. Cultural development is actively promoted through visits, visitors, high-quality art, drama, and music, including an annual whole-school theatre trip, performances from visiting companies, musical ensembles, and partnerships with secondary schools. Pupils also learn British values explicitly through PSHE, RE, assemblies, and fundraising activities, supporting their growth into responsible, respectful citizens who make a positive contribution to society.

. Building on this success, we are seeking opportunities to enrich the curriculum with real-world experiences, such as work placements and collaborations with local businesses and community organizations. We are also developing a comprehensive life skills programme, including practical workshops on budgeting and time management, to prepare students for success in the wider world.

Pupils make a highly positive contribution to the life of the school and wider community, taking on leadership and support roles that foster well-being and responsibility. Strong local community links enable pupils to make a meaningful difference to vulnerable groups, including visits to local care homes, while MAT-wide events, such as careers fayres and philharmonic orchestra experiences, broaden horizons and raise aspirations. Barriers are actively removed to ensure SEND and disadvantaged pupils have high levels of participation, with equity carefully monitored.

Support for emotional well-being and mental health is recognised as a strength, with ongoing efforts to enhance accessibility through initiatives such as drop-in sessions with mental health professionals. Pupils’ respect, inclusivity, and cultural awareness are central to our ethos and promoted through both curriculum and extra-curricular activities. Plans are underway to further develop global citizenship opportunities, including international exchanges and collaborations with schools abroad.

Physical health and well-being are promoted through PE lessons, but additional initiatives are planned, such as lunchtime fitness clubs and healthy eating programmes, to encourage lifelong healthy habits. In careers education, the programme is under review to provide tailored work experience placements and engagement with industry professionals, supporting pupils as they transition to further education, training, or employment.

A range of workshops and events—including Anti-Bullying Week, NSPCC “Speak Out, Stay Safe”, e-safety, and road safety—support pupils’ emotional and physical well-being. Pupils participate in Bikeability training, while Year 6 residential visits further enhance resilience, collaboration, and confidence. Weekly extra-curricular clubs provide additional opportunities for growth, with participation tracked robustly.

We are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment that nurtures pupils’ personal development. Safeguarding policies are regularly reviewed to ensure alignment with current government guidelines. Through building on existing strengths and implementing these initiatives, we aim to provide an outstanding environment for the personal development, well-being, and future success of all pupils.
